Network config Menu

Network configuration probably causes the most confusion because nothing visible happens - except the printer doesn't work.

  • TCP/IP Config - Automatic / Manual : Automatic will use DHCP / APIPA to configure the printer. Manual requires IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway to be set. (Manual configuration requires some knowledge but tends to be less trouble in the long term. )
  • Network Services: IPv4 and IPv6 On / Off. Default is both on. Most UK sites working behind a NAT router might consider turning IPv6 off however this might interfere with some cloud based services.
  • Show IP address: The printer can display its local IP address alternating with supplies information. Default is not to do this. If you have any difficulty displaying the address and using "ping" from the computer will help with setup.
  • Restore Defaults: Restore network settings to defaults.

Error Messages

One of the benefits of the M1210 series is that it has a small screen, so it can give clear error messages.

22 Scanner Error

Hardware error with the flatbed document scanner (not the laser scanner). Check the scanner connections. Check that the scanner head can move along it's track.

50.X Fuser Error

Try turning the printer off, then on again. The fuser fixes the toner powder image to the page using a combination of heat and pressure. The fuser heater will ultimately fail and when this happens it will give this message. It is worth trying turning the printer off, waiting 30 seconds, then turning it back on again.

It is also worth making sure the printer is plugged directly into a wall-socket rather than an extension surge limiter or UPS. It is possible for a marginal low voltage to mean the fuser cannot reach working temperature in the time allowed.

The fuser film assembly is part RM1-6873.

52 Scanner Error

A scanner error has occurred. the service manual doesn't clarify but error 52 is normally the laser-scanner not the flatbed-CIS scanner.

It is worth turning the printer off, waiting 30 seconds and then on again. Scanner motors do sometimes jam for no apparent reason.

Comm.error

Fax communication error. check that the fax phone line is working properly and plugged in. Try slowing down the fax speed and/or turning off error correction mode. Reseat the RJ11 connectors. Try a different phone line. Persistent errors imply a problem with the internal fax board.

Device error Press [OK]

Internal communication error. This is a warning message. The output from the current print job might be incorrect, inspect it for problems.

Door Open

Close the cartridge door properly to resume printing.

Engine comm. Error

Internal hardware error of some kind unspecified in the service manual. Try turning the printer on and off and if that doesn't work try reseating the internal cables, particularly those between the PSU, formatter and engine controller.

Fax recv. error

Unable to receive an internal fax. There might be an error in the fax meassage that wasn't corrected . If the error is persistent across several messages and senders then check the cabling.

Fax Send error

Unable to send a fax. Try confirming that the phone line is working and that the intended recipient can receive faxes. If the error is persistent across several messages and senders then check the cabling. The internal fax board might need replacing.

Jam in <location> alternates with Open door and clear jam

The printer has detected a paper jam. Some jams can be cleared by removing the paper from the input or delivery trays, some require the cartridge to be removed to get at a paper jam between the registration assembly and fuser.

Load tray 1 PLAIN <SIZE> alternates with Cleaning Mode

The printer is performing a cleaning cycle. Put a plain sheet in the tray - HP recommend using a laser-printer rated transparency. Press OK to start the cleaning cycle.

Load tray <TYPE>, <SIZE>

The tray is empty. Load the tray with the correct type and size of paper.

If you get the message "load letter" in the UK a setting in your application or the printer driver is asking for US-letter sized paper and needs changing to A4.

Manual duplex alternates with Load tray1 Press [OK]

The printer can be asked to print duplex (double sided) but the user needs to turn the page over then press OK. Pages go in printed-side down with the top-edge first. Then Press [OK]

Manual feed <SIZE>, <TYPE> alternates with Press [OK]

The printer is set for manual feed of a page. Load the tray with the required size and type of paper and press [OK] ( or just press [OK] to use the paper that is currently there).

Memory is low Press [OK]

The product does not have enough memory to process the job. Try waiting for one job to complete before sending another. Try splitting a long print job into several smaller. Try turning the printer off and on again to clear anything in memory.

Misprint Press [OK]

The printer has experienced some kind of error that might affect the output. Press [OK] to continue but examine the page for problems.

No paper pickup Press [OK]

If this happens often is the pickup roller RL1-2593 excessively worn - if so replace it.

Page too complex Press [OK]

The page is too complex to be handled by the drivers or print memory. Press [OK] to clear the the message and allow the printer to finish what it can of the job or press [X] to cancel the job. This might happen with very complicated graphics, try printing at a lower resolution to simplify the job.

Paper jam clear paper path.

The printer thinks there is a paper jam in the input tray, probably a page that didn't pick-up correctly.

Settings Cleared

The printer cleared down settings from a job.
