HP LaserJet Professional M1210 Series Printers

The HP LaserJet Professional M1130 Series Multifunction Printer is an A4 mono laser printer / copier / scanner aimed at individuals and small offices. Its bigger sisters are theM1210 which has an automatic document feeder (ADF) as well as a flatbed scanner, network connection and fax capability.and theM1217nfw which has wireless networking as well.

  • An Ethernet connection is useful for sharing a printer in an office but many home users don't need it.
  • An Automatic Document Feeder is useful for scanning in multi-page letters and documents but would rarely be wanted by home users.

For home offices and individual use at work the M1130 is a bit lower cost and less complicated than the other machines in the same family.

If a straight-forward printer is preferred look at theP1100 series .

These printers are all based on the Canon LBP 6000 engine, first seen in the P1005 and similar printers. HP's use of the engine is quite different here; creating a personal copier and printer in a convenient, small, low cost unit with contemporary styling.

HP's marketing pitch for these printers might be a bit odd. The LaserJet Professional designation suggests they are targeting medium / large businesses. The printers could work in that role but the small cartridges give rather high running costs that IT managers might object to and the lack of a proper paper cassette might reduce the machine's attraction in that market. Home and home-office buyers are more likely to be influenced by low purchase price. HP are experimenting with the words "Professional" and "Enterprise" in their sub-branding.

HP have chosen to make the M1130 and M1210 printers in 6 variants, aimed at regional markets. The EMEA version is the M1132. There may be firmware variations

Printers that take the CE285A cartridge are intended for the US and European markets.

Printers that take the CE388A cartridge are intended for emerging Asian markets. Apparently they use a less demanding and less precise toner.

There is more on cartridges below

The firmware will differ between models and so cartridges intended for one market may not work in the other. Otherwise the difference between the printers is a fine-tuning of model to market conditions.

Colour:

These are mono - black only - printers (although the scanner can handle colour). Mono printers retain advantages for business printing in being simple, reliable and cheap to run. For business process printing - statements, invoices, remittance advice and shipment notes they remain unbeatable.

Control:

Dual digit numeric LED display;

  • 5 buttons (Up, Down, Cancel, Switch, Start copy);
  • 6 LED indicator lights (Attention, Ready, Toner low, Number of pages, Dark/light, Reduce/enlarge)

One distinction between the M1130 series and the M1210 is that the lower cost printer doesn't have an LCD display panel for messages - there is a two-digit LED display instead. This may make the printer fractionally more difficult to use since some messages have to be interpreted. For reference:

  • E1 : Paper Input Tray Empty - Load the paper
  • E2 : A door is open - Check the print cartridge door
  • E3 : Cartridge - Ensure the print cartridge is installed correctly
  • E4 : Memory Full - Simplify the print job
  • E5 : Paper did not pick up - Clean or replace the pickup roller
  • H0 : Manual feed mode - Load the correct paper type and size in the input tray
  • H1 : Duplex mode - Load the pages with one side printed into the tray to print the second sides

Black (A4): Up to 18 ppm; First Page Out Black: As fast as 8.5 sec (from Auto-Off)

Maximum resolution 600 dpi

HP say :

  • "Print Technology Resolution" : FastRes 600; FastRes 1200
  • "Print Resolution" : Black (best): Up to 600 x 600 dpi (1200 effective dpi with HP FastRes 1200); Black (normal): Up to 600 x 400 dpi (600 effective dpi with HP FastRes 600)

HP don't say whether FastRes 1200 has any impact on print speed. The printer has a moderately powerful processor and RAM for a mono machine and formatting is host-based. If printing slows in high resolution or with complex print jobs that might be the computer rather than the printer.

Duty Cycle:

Monthly duty cycle A4: Up to 8000 pages. The print cartridges are rated for 1600 pages so this printer isn't intended for frequent or long print jobs. Look to the Pro-300 and Pro-400 ranges for better economy on long run print jobs.

Print Cartridge Features

Authentication for genuine HP print cartridges.

Easy ordering for replacement supplies.

Supplies status page shows estimated toner level in the print cartridge. Not available for non-HP supplies.

One of the benefits of HP Mono laser printers is simplicity - just a single print cartridge to change.

CE285A HP LaserJet CE285A Black Print Cartridge.

CE285AD HP LaserJet CE285A Black Print Cartridge Dual Pack.

The print cartridge is a single piece design containing toner, developer, drum and waste collection blade and receptacle. Average cartridge yields 1600 standard pages. Declared yield value in accordance with ISO/IEC 19752.

The CE285A cartridge holds just 1600 pages worth of toner and its price gives these printers a rather high UK street price per copy of £ 2.6p (US official pricing is 4.25 cents per page).

Toner formulation is 55% Styrene acrylate copolymer, 45% ferrite and 10% Wax according to the MSDS. The high percentage of ferrite with its magnetic qualities apparently improves image sharpness.

For Asian emerging markets HP ships a different cartridge, the CE388A which uses a less exacting toner. Yield is the same.

Printers ship with a 700 page reduced capacity starter cartridge.

As usual the 220 Volt fuser is used in the UK, Europe and much of the rest of the world. The 110/120Volt fuser is used in the US, Canada and Japan and will probably be a special order outside those regions.

Maintenance Kit:

Possibly because there isn't strictly a fuser and only one each of pickup roller and pad there doesn't seem to be an official maintenance kit listed at present.

Service:

These are comparatively low cost printers so when there is a problem people will want to deal with it in-house rather than pay the call-out for an experienced technician. Here are some hints.

When there is a problem with printing check that the power light is on. Problems with printers often turn out to be power turned off. Check the power cable seating, its an IEC C14 type and they need pushing home. UK power cables have a built in fuse, check the fuse or swap the cable. Check the USB cable.

A frequently tried fix for computer problems is to turn it off, wait, then turn it back on. Turning the power off forces machines back to their default state. Turn off both printer and computer then turn the printer on and finally the computer.

Checking the documentation may also help. Printers ship with a quick setup guide and a user guide but the CD often gets lost.

HP LaserJet M1130/M1210 MFP Series User Guide is available online

CE841-90904 - User Guide Product user guide. CE841-90904

The service manual for the HP CLJ_Pro_M1130 and CLJ_Pro M1210 does not ship with the printer, it may be reserved for engineers who have attended a course. However manuals can often be found online. The manual is:

Part number: CE841-90985 Edition 1, 4/2010

Many laser printer faults can be identified because the way the machine works uses a succession of different sized roller. Those rollers leave characteristic marks down the page.

Problem Solving

These are fairly basic mono printers so most faults will be cleared by changing the print cartridge. If that doesn't clear the fault put the new cartridge back in its light-proof wrappings and in the box for later use.

To test that the basic print mechanism does work there is an engine test. The engine test is set away by opening and closing the cartridge loading door 5 times at roughly 2 second intervals. The printer will produce a page of thin vertical stripes - not very elaborate but a good basic test within the capabilities of the engine management chip.

Paper Jams are likely to be a failure to pick up, since the printer has a fairly simple paper path. Make sure the paper is held under the pickup roller and pad in the back of the machine by the paper stop. If the printer frequently fails to feed or feeds more than one sheet the pickup roller and pad need cleaning or replacing.

Bad Print that is too light, too dark or uneven on the page is likely to be an issue with the print cartridge or drum. Try shaking the cartridge (over a washable surface in case of spills) and check both cartridge and inside the printer for spilled toner. Clean cartridge and printer surfaces paying attention to metallic contacts. There is more on cleaning here.
