HP RC2-5239 Legal Tray Cover for HP P4015 and M601 series Printers.

top-right-photo top-right-photo

The RC2-5239 part is the Rear Tray Cover for use in the HP LaserJet P4015, P4515 and M601, M602 and M603 series printers. Legal cover sounds impressive; its actually a plastic flap that hooks on the rear lower part of the printer.

American "legal" paper is rather long and the printer isn't massively deep so when the tray has legal paper in it the backstop sticks out a bit and this flap opens to accommodate it.

Flaps for the P4015 and M601 series are charcoal-grey (or just plain "black") and the P4014 have white covers.

Print In Space

Laser printers probably could work in space but both paper supply and the collection bin would need a retention spring on top to hold paper down. A significant issue would be whether toner in the supply hopper would still move correctly - it would presumably form something of a cloud - but then we think it does that anyway.

Significant problems would be getting the thing up there - inkjets, thermal printers and even dot-matrix are a lot lighter. Also the fuser needs an intermittent kilowatt of heat - an erratic load that might upset other systems.

Inkjet might be a good bet because it can deliver colour easily but only certain kinds of cartridges would be appropriate, the kind that hold the ink in a pressurised rubber bladder (gravity won't make the ink flow). The printer probably needs a particulates fan and filter as well, because some ink drifts away from the heads. Without gravity to settle particulates these ink droplets might be more persistent. However the air is being recycled so that might be good enough.

Our preference runs to thermal printers because they can be small enough to fit into an instrument panel and their mechanical simplicity means they are reliable.

The RC2-5239 is a black plastic rectangle 275 x 78mm approximately with some protruding moulding at the rear providing a neat finish when it is installed. Two protruding moulding lift the flap when a cassette tray has the backstop fully extended. It is simple and plastic and the only working surfaces are a boss on one end and an axle on the other. Gravity holds the flap down when shorter paper is used.   Caution! A spring loaded version of the flap is needed for use in zero gravity situations.

and RC2-5239 EF378L RC2-5761 EF378L

A noted fault with the legal flap is that engineers pull them off to have a look in the back of the printer and see if the paper lift is working and then forget to put them back on. This may allow rodents to nest in the printer.

Warranty

Warranty: This part is supplied with a 90 day return to base warranty

… or that is what June wrote. Its standard policy in spares.

Why such a low warranty term on spares? Some people think that if they have a roller replaced anything else that goes wrong is covered for a year.

On the whole, when engineers have changed a part on a printer they then test things for a while and after a few dozen to a few hundred pages conclude that things look good.   How long should "cover" last

This is a "legal cover", so perhaps extra cover is a legal requirement. As a special concession, on this part only we will extend a free lifetime warranty - whilst the part lives it is under warranty - if it breaks then it has died and warranty ceases.

Web Research

A Google Query on RC2-2539 (in quotes") in August 2013 gave about 5,420 results (0.24 seconds) with the first in organic search being as follows:

printerworks.com new £24.50 refurb $16.50, sparepartswarehouse.com $11.03, chilternitparts.com £7.92, partshere.com $11.29, impactcomputers.com $19.98, blackmoreit.com £14.99, ebay.com mark04usa used $9.99+$3.00, ebay.com refurb $17.50, pricegrabber.com $64.64, amazon.co.uk ZAR Systems £23.00,

Prices noted are for a new item, one off, without tax. The list is as encountered. We haven't bothered with currency conversion - half of our readers are outside the UK and are more interested in dollar prices.

There is one page with only an image, two or three pages with visit website to buy - no helpful blogs on this part. There are a couple of irrelevant pages . All the rest in the list were merely vendors giving no more information than found in the HP brochure.

Supply Situation

In 2013 this part was not listed by any UK distributors. In 2015 it has appeared on UK distribution lists and one actually has 3 "refurbs" in stock. (Which is odd, because they had 4 of some other covers, perhaps they sold one.

So where in the past it was "doubtful that we can provide these parts at all" now we can . Actually we can supply one ourselves by post because when Graham takes things to bits he notoriously leaves them lying around - and if he isn't careful rodents will nest in the printer.

These are guidelines, our prices change with distribution lists - see the catalog. Stock numbers and industrial intelligence indicate low (but possibly not zero) demand for the part.
