HP Part RC3-1470 is a torsion Spring for HP LaserJet 600 M601, M602 and M603 series Printers

This spring is used on the LJ M601, M602 and M603 MP tray door. Why there was a change of design from the P4014 which doesn't seem to have one is unknown, maybe the door action was felt to be crude ? The same design probably won't be used on the LJ-M604 series as they have different plastics.

The torsion spring helps counterbalance the MP tray door. Its a coiled steel spring made from wire about a millimeter thick with ends shaped to engage the chassis and the door.

All RC3-1470 does is counterbalance the MP door to a small extent.

RC3-1470 is just about incapable of having a fault - but it could get lost.

Prices noted are for a new item, one off, without tax. The list is as encountered. We haven't bothered with currency conversion - half of our readers are outside the UK and are more interested in dollar prices.

None of the websites seen gave any further information on the product. All the listings are merely vendors giving no more information than found in the HP parts list.

Supply Situation

It may seem odd that a simple spring can be priced anywhere from £8.82 to $49.44. Everprint's amazing £190.88 in the 2013 list is easily explained - its an old-established supplier putting up a price that says "don't be nosey you aren't a professional" to people who are not logged in. (They probably sell mostly to "insiders" who expect to sell-on to "outsiders". The spread of other prices is not so easily explained; some are clearly just a try-on. We particularly enjoy Impact Computers idea of adding value with a "protection plan" for a torsion spring!   (The list driven crap on the Web can be quite amusing at times ).

The part is listed by a couple of UK distributors but they don't hold stock. We think demand for the part will be somewhere between low and absolute zero. In other words, this is one of the parts that pointlessly clutter up spares lists.

However, if you need an RC3-1470 because the tray got smashed and the cleaner through away the pieces we can probably supply it via two routes

  • HP original stock. No doubt HP or their assembly contractors (Canon Thailand?, Flextronics) have one of these tucked away against a rainy day. So in that case the price reflects taking the thing out of a production batch, storing it against an unlikely request, processing an order and flying the thing round the world. Simon suggests Everprint's price is a matter of making it go the wrong way round the world.
  • The other way to get it is "refurbished" - ie taken out of a printer that was broken for spares. You may ask "why can't I have it for free?" - Well that is because someone has to waste part of their life identifying the part and putting it on a website so that you, dear reader, could buy it if you want!

If you want one we can probably provide this part when required. The price is likely to be about £9. Delivery time 5-7 days.
