HP RL1-1641 Pickup Roller for HP P4014 and M601 Series Printers.

top-right-photo

The RL1-1641 is the Multipurpose Tray (Tray 1) Pickup Roller for HP LaserJet P4014. P4015, P4515, M601, M602 and M603 printers. This roller is used with two other rollers ( RL1-1663 and RL1-1654) which together make up the feed-roller set for the tray. The three rollers are usually changed together using the kit CB506-67905.

The rollers are usually replaced as a set as it can be difficult to tell which of the rollers is at fault when feed problems occur. However there may be occassions where individual rollers are more use - if a lot of printers are being dealt with then the rollers don't necessarily all wear at the same rate and we think it is actually this pickup roller that is likely to wear least.

The RL1-1641 is a smallish black and white roller. Black lightly textured rubber on a white core with a 19 toothed drive cog on one end. In some ways its a miniature version of RM1-0036 wich is the pickup roller used for tray 2, 3 etc. Presumably HP didn't use the same roller set in tray 1 because of space limitations and perhaps a feeling that it wasn't used as much. On the other hand they did use a three-roller pickup and feed set and not the roller and pad used on earlier designs.

Rollers wear out because the texture of the rubber wears away with use.

There is no way to repair a worn roller. However rollers sometimes get contaminated with a scale build-up and a wash with slightly soapy water might just get further life out of them. Don't use isopropyl (IPA) as it is likely to de-nature the rubber - although when the roller is on its way out it's further treatment doesn't really matter. One possibility is to turn the rubber sleeve inside out. That will be bifficult with this roller and is not a recommended procedure but it may work for a little while. Another possibility is platen cleaner. Non of these ideas will avoid ultimately needing to buy a kit - its in the catalog here.

The pickup roller is at fault if the feed actions occur but the paper scarcely moves. If the pickup roller does get the paper under the feed-separation pair but it fails to move fully from there then they are to blame.

Associated parts are RL1-1663 and RL1-1654) which provide the feed and separation pair.

HP Information

HP Partsurfer says about RL1-1641:

RL1-1641-000CN Multi-purpose/tray 1 paper pick-up roller Part RL1-1641-000CN is no longer supplied. Please order the replacement, CB506-67905

In September 2013 there did not seem to be an entry in Icecat for roller RL1-1641 individually. Presumably that reflects it's replacement by the CB506-67905 kit.

Web Research

A Google Query on RM1-4550 (in quotes") in August 2013 gave about 4,570 results (0.22 seconds) with the first in organic search being as follows:

Prices noted are for a new item, one off, without tax. The list is as encountered. We haven't bothered with currency conversion - half of our readers are outside the UK and are more interested in dollar prices.

There are one or two listed with check price and availability, one or two pages with contact supplier - one possibly helpful blogs on this part. There are a couple of irrelevant pages . All the rest in the list were merely vendors giving no more information than found in HP partsurfer.

There probably isn't much need for instructions or support as the rollers all just push onto their respective shafts.

Supply Situation

At the moment there seems to be one global source of these rollers and that is HP. The part number implies the rollers were originally made for them by Canon and that possible remains true. However these printers are to HP's own specification and there is no direct Canon equivalent.

The part has been listed in the past by a couple of distributors but they don't hold stock. We think demand for the part will be very low because most people buy the maintenance kit. Individual rollers are not generally supplied by HP or Canon. RL1-1663 is likewise in short supply - not even listed. Oddly though, separation roller RL1-1654 is readily available.

In the research we note that a few people are offering the roller "refurbished". It isn't practical to refurbish rollers so they are talking about "working pulls" meaning rollers take from decommisioned pulls. Whilst they are obtainable we could only recommend them if all other sources of supply are exhausted.

As yet, we have not seen offers of compatible parts, although a couple of the Asian suppliers noted above might be doing that. We generally have reservations about the quality of compatible parts.

We can provide this part when required. The price is about £12.50 for an original which largely reflects the logistics of obtaining one. The complete kit of 3 rollers at between £15 and £22 is obviously better value.

These are guidelines, our prices change with distribution lists - see the catalog. Stock numbers indicate there is not much call for the part.
