HP RL1-1658 Retard Drive Shaft for the P4014 Series Printers.

The RL1-1658-000CN is the retard roller drive shaft for the P4014, P4015, and P4515 printers. The retard roller is in the front center of the cassette tray RM1-4559and is used to prevent more than one sheet of paper going into the printer feed path at a time. The retard roller in the tray is driven from the main motor in the body of the printer and power communicated by the drive shaft. The retard roller drive shaft RL1-1658 is the little cog that sticks into the cassette tray front guide and carries mechanical power to the roller.

The LaserJet 600 M601 printers use a different partRL1-3020which does the same job. The LaserJet 4200 had a similar mechanism.

The part is a little cog on a shaft.

The retard roller in the tray is driven to rotate in the opposite direction to the feed roller in the body of the printer and immediately above it. If one sheet of paper is pushed forward by the pickup roller the feed roller wins because the retard roller's power is deliberately weakened by the torque limiter. If more than one sheet arrives the feed roller will push the one on top forward but the retard roller will push those underneath backwards onto the paper stack again until the top sheet has cleared. The roller pair make a highly reliable paper feed mechanism - more so that the cheaper alternative of a roller and pad.

Normally if paper fails to move its just a mater of changing the rollers, which clip onto their respective shafts. Kits are CB506-67905 for tray 1 (multipurpose) and CB506-67904 for tray 2 (cassette).

However if the printer still misfeeds (fails to feed reliably or suffers multiple feeds) then the torque limiter RC2-5262 (RC2-5771)Might be to blame- or this drive shaft might be damaged.

If the retard drive cog gets damaged it will be noisy or won't work at all. Replacement will probably be needed. It doesn't seem to happen very often.

If the retard drive shaft is not working41.3 errors with two or more pages stuck in the printer is a possibility.

Replacing the retard drive shaft will need some technical ability. The covers have to come off the printer and the paper pickup assembly needs dismantling to get a new shaft in place.

and says it fits the P4014. P4015 and P4515 printers - and nothing else.

RL1-1658

So far as we know there is no alternative to this part.

The retard roller drive comes from the paper pickup drive assembly RM1-4532 and it drives the RC2-5262 (RC2-5771)

Supply Situation

This part is not commonly listed by UK distributors although web-vendors frequently show it (Google search suggests 144,000 results). A suggestion is that it isn't wanted a great deal. Cost would be about £3. The part can easily be sourced as a "pull" from decomissioned machines. These are guidelines, our prices change with distribution lists - see the catalog .

Stock numbers indicate there is not much call for the part - but if you got here presumably you want one - if our catalog doesn't show any then email us, we should be able to get one.
