Reliable Remanufactured Cartridges

One of the merits of the P4014 against a new printer is the low cost of good re-manufactured cartridges.

HP RL1-1663 Multi-purpose Tray 1 Feed-Separation Roller for HP Laserjet P4014, P4015, P4515, M4555, M4559, M601, M602 and M603 Printers.

The RL1-1663 part is the Multi-purpose Tray 1 Feed/Separation Roller for use in the HP Laserjet P4014, P4015, P4515, M4555, M4559 Printers.The same roller is used in the LaserJet Enterprise 600 M601, M602 and M603 and the M604 series printers although at the time of first writing in 2013 HP online material didn't always reflect that. This is part of the paper feed mechanism. How long it will be before the rollers need changing clearly depends on how heavily the tray is used, some users don't even know the MP tray is there. Others use it continually to feed letterhead and envelopes. This roller is included in the paper feed repair kit CB506-67905 with RL1-1654 MP Tray 1 Separation Roller and RL1-1641 MP Tray 1 Pickup Roller.

Curiously enough, these rollers don't seem to be included in the current version of the HP CB389A maintenance kit.

The P4014 / M601 printers differ from their predecessors in having a three-roller pickup and feed mechanism. Older printers have a single roller and a pad which is less flexible and reliable.

The RL1-1663 has a blue-black textured coating and a white plastic insert which enables the roller to be clipped easily onto the drive mechanism.

Warranty: 90 day warranty. Rollers individually become worn because the texture of the rubber wears away with use. It is then unable to feed the paper properly, presenting paper misfeeds and jams when paper misfeeds or jams occur and is usually used as part of a kit to replace worn rollers in the Multi-purpose tray.

There is no way to repair a worn roller. However rollers sometimes get contaminated with a scale build-up and a wash with slightly soapy water might just get further life out of them. Don't use isopropyl (IPA) as it is likely to de-nature the rubber - although when the roller is on its way out its further treatment doesn't really matter. One possibility is to turn the rubber sleeve inside out. That will be bifficult with this roller and is not a recommended procedure but it may work for a little while. Another possibility is platen cleaner. None of these ideas will avoid ultimately needing to buy a kit - it's in the catalog here.

Associated parts are RL1-1641 and RL1-1654 which provide the feed/separation and pickup pair.

HP Information

In 2013 HP Partsurfer said about RL1-1663:

RL1-1663-000CN Multi-purpose/tray 1 feed roller Part RL1-1663-000CN is no longer supplied. Please order the replacement, CB506-67905

That message reamined in July 2015.

In September 2013 there did not seem to be an entry in Icecat for roller RL1-1663 individually. Presumably that reflects its replacement by the CB506-67905 kit.

Prices noted are for a new item, one off, without tax. The list is as encountered. We haven't bothered with currency conversion - half of our readers are outside the UK and are more interested in dollar prices.

These sites appear to be selling this item alone, rather than as part of a kit. There are a few pages listed with check price and availability, one or two pages with contact supplier - no helpful blog on this part. There are a couple of irrelevant pages . All the rest in the list were merely vendors giving no more information than found in the HP brochure.

Supply Situation

The part is not listed by any distributors. We think demand for the part will be very low. This is probably because the distributors incorporate the part in the paper feed repair kit.

It is unlikely we will be able to supply this part on its own - we would supply the paper feed repair kit.
