HP LaserJet P4014, P4015, P4515, M4555, M601, M602 and M603 Paper Feed Guide Assembly - RM1-4548.

These are HP's mid to high range mono laser printers. The design was introduced with the LaserJet P4515 in spring 2008. It was based on the LaserJet 4200 / 4300 series and resembles them internally.

These printers have always used some moving belts in the paper path just after the cartridge. Presumably the distance to the fuser is a bit too great for paper to travel unaided. In practice this additional belt mechanism only seems to play an important part when duplex printing - in non-duplex models completely removing the wider belt and roller appears to have no adverse affect.

The belts and the idle-rollers they run round are quite lightly made and perhaps the surprise is how well they perform. Intermittently they do get broken.

Typical views of the problem, the rollers are out of place. They might reseat but if not a bit of work is needed to replace the part.

If the belts and rollers have come unseated it may be possible to put things back together with the cartridge out and a torch or bright light to see into the printer.

The Laserjet 2200 had a similar arrangement and HP made spare part RY7-5052 available which contains replacement rollers. However they don't seem to have done that for the P4014 etc.

The replacement part is RM1-4548-000CN. Its the complete paper guide assembly and isn't terribly expensive so perhaps there is not need to make up a kit, if you just need one part buy the assembly.

If the whole assembly has to be replaced the following parts have to be removed to get the job done.

  1. Duplex accessory or cover
  2. Tray 2 extension door
  3. Fuser
  4. Formatter cover and cage
  5. Top cover
  6. Right-side cover
  7. Left-side cover
  8. Top accessory cover
  9. High-voltage power supply

Changing one little roller can mean quite a significant strip-down. This is a pity as by making the metal bracket on the HV-PSU come up on the inside instead of the outside of the feed-belt assembly it could be unscrewed and changed quite easily. However that isn't how these printers are made.

There are full instructions on dismantling the printer in the service manual and some hintshere.

The part is visually very similar to that in the LJ 4200 etc which was called the "paper-feed belt assembly" RM1-0025-040CN. The modification on the new design is to add a screw at the front right so they aren't compatible.
