HP RM1-4582 for HP P4014, P4015 and P4515 Printers.

HP Part RM1-4582 is the DC controller for the LaserJet P4014 series printers. DC controller is the term HP use for the print engine controller. The print engine controller is a complete microprocessor subsystem that controls the motors and monitors the sensors in the printer. It will usually be provided by the engine manufacturer - the printer "brand" provides the formatter which controls the page layout.

The RM1-4582 is used by all ten models in the P4014 series of printers but not by their successors the LaserJet Enterprise 600 M601, 602 and 603. Printers this device fits are the P4014, P4015, P4515 in their N, TN, DN, and X variants.

The "PCA" is a small circuit board with a flat connector cable together with a blue and yellow wires leading to a multipin header connector for the formatter. The DCC itself is covered with a great many connectors - it is the electrical focus of the printer. Other than being the focus for so much wiring it looks quite unimpressive because the functionality is contained within a single chip. There are no motor drivers because they are on the motor boards themselves. Power comes from the Power Supply board RM1-4578. TheFormatter provides instructions to print and the video data for the laser. A coil and some capacitors are presumably associated with making local power.

The DC Controller is a complete microprocessor subsystem that sorts out actions requested by the formatter into actions by motors, clutches and solenoids and monitors the various switches and sensors as printing actions progress.

On the whole the DC controller is not under a great deal of stress; it doesn't need to be a markedly powerful processor and there are just a few drive chips on the board. Faults that seem DC controller related are most likely to be badly seated connectors, so check those points first. Also check the voltages from the PSU as it could crash the DC Controller. However as with anything electronic the DC controller is quite complex and vulnerable to random accidents from packaging failure, static damage, cosmic rays, overheating, bad solder joints and the other reasons given for random chip failure.

It is easy to test the DC controller. Press the engine test button and it should generate a page covered with thin black lines. If it doesn't, that suggests there is something wrong. The DC controller can still do this without the formatter being present.

This is not regarded as a highly repairable part. However it is worth inspecting the solder for dry joints particularly around the connectors.

For the individual entry RM1-4582-090CN it says :

RM1-4582-090CN DC Controller assy

... and gives the usual list of 11 printers in the P4014 series: P4014, P4014N, P4014DN, P4015N, P4015DN, P4015TN, P4015X, P4515N, P4515TN, P4515X, P4515XM

Icecat says the EAN is 5711045197017.

The RM1-4582 seems to have been through a series of revisions., hence the progression of numbers reported by HP Partsurfer. It is likely to be called one of RM1-4582-000CN to RM1-4582-090CN by HP. the naming suggests it is made for HP by Canon so there may be an RM1-4582-000.

Web Research

A Google search showed About 16,400 results (0.18 seconds). We examined the first 30 and found nothing but offers for sale, no substantive information about the device or evidence that it is much needed.

Supply Situation

DC controllers don't fail often but are intermittently required. Puzzlingly a couple of Chinese manufacturers seem to be offering this part "new" and one "90% new" which seems unlikely. We struggle to believe it has been possible to make a compatible - they wouldn't have access to the ASIC design information and firmware (but it just has to look right ?). We think only HP (and possibly Canon) can supply genuine new parts.

The part is listed by three UK based distributors but only one had stock of new products in July 2013.

One UK distributor carries "refurbished" RM1-4582 (which we might interpret as "pulls" from working printers.

We can provide these parts when required. The price on a new item would be about £87 and of a refurbished one about £45.

In July 2013 eBay vendor PrintTraders charged £99.99 for a refurb and Amazon Vendor TrustedTech £125.12. Chips price is £88.46 ex VAT, LabdaTek £86.83 and More £99.47 but offering free delivery. Our pricing currently seems favourable.

These prices are just guidelines, our prices change with distribution lists - see the catalog. Stock numbers indicate there is not a great call for the part. New prices are likely to hold. Refurb prices are likely to vary markedly over time with supply and demand for a part like this.
