HP M601 RM1-8414 Paper Delivery Assy.

top-right-photo

HP RM1-8414 is the Paper Delivery Assy for the LaserJet M601, M602 and M603 printers. These are the rollers that lift paper up the back of the printer and into the face-down delivery tray on top. It isn't a complicated mechanism and should last a very long time.

The mechanism is basically a plastic frame forming the back of the delivery tray with three sets of rollers held by bushings. There is also the paper diverter flap which ordinarilly directs paper to the face-down dray.   Output accessories have a solenoid which presses a lever on the diverter so that paper exits from the top of the printer.

Like any rollers these will ultimately wear. On the other hand they aren't the soft rubber and plastics used in pickup stages so that won't be an early experience.

RM1-8414 Faults

The assembly does have a known fault, it is accused of being the source of the squeaky noise in these printers which users report as quite annoying. Changing it may therefore fix the fault.

Beware though. Laser printers are made up of lots of rollers driven by cogs. Plastic rollers running on plastic bearings driven by plastic cogs are quite likely to be squeaky. It takes vanishingly small amounts of energy to produce an annoying noise - which is why hearing is such a useful sense.

Service technicians usually dislike "squeak" faults because they are erratic and irregular by nature. The moment you take the screws out of the covers the machine subtly changes shape and the problem dissapears. Leave site and a few hours later it is back again.

Lubrication may seem like an answer but these are long plastic shafts with "rubber" material interspersed along them. Lubricant probably has to be silicone or a synthetic hydrocarbon - the trusty 3-in-1 may cause the plastic to swell and crack. Graphite sounds as though it should work but penetrates and cause swelling as does molybdenum disulfide (moly).   of course the lubricant has to be kept off the rubber and must not migrate onto it.

For use in M601, M602, M603

This part might also be known by HP's full code which is RM1-8414-000CN

The part appears to be similar to the M604, M605, M606 paper delivery assembly RM1-6319. Principle of operation and general appearance are the same but we cannot say they are identical.

RM1-8414 Removal and Replacement

This is one of those parts that causes trouble in removal and replacement - it isn't obvious and we don't think the manual is quite right.

Obviously the top, rear and side covers have to come off the machine as a preliminary.

Then what the service manual refers to as the "guide" has to come off. It is secured by one screw in the lower middle and two clips at its top and it lifts away. Internally it says it is RC2-2438. That still doesn't free up the paper deliver assembly.

The assembly is also secured by the metal bracket on the rear left of the printer (right as you are looking at the rear). Within the bracket is a grounding spring but it causes little trouble. The bracket itself is a little swine to remove. Take the two screws out and slide it a couple of millimetres to the rear - easing the Delivery Assembly plastic to let you do it - then push the bracket back out of the way. There is no need to lift the bracket free.

At the other side the assembly is secured by the "shaft-lock". The shaft-lock is a plastic boss with a retaining tab just inside the black shaft with two rollers. The shaft lock rotates a quarter turn clockwise and can then slide out. Do not break or lose it - HP says in the manual that it does not provide replacements.

  • Locking shafts may be available "refurbed" but since a whole printer has to die expect a high price.)
  • There is a locking bushing for the M604 series numbered RC1-0136 - it looks right in the diagram.

Supply Situation

In November 2014 we found this part listed by three distributors, one held stock, In Januaryy 2016 there was no stock - its the kind of part where there isn't much demand. The price is around £30. These are just guidelines to give an idea, our prices change with distribution lists - see the catalog . .

Stock numbers for the Paper Delivery Assy vary with time and at the moment there is low stock which indicates there is very low demand for the part.

If stock is available, the part will usually ship for next-day delivery. Its the kind of part that is usually suplied on a 5-7 day basis.
