Lexmark C532n

Lexmark C532n and C532dn aimed at "Outstanding value in network-ready, colour laser printer for small workgroups". They were introduced in October 2006 to reinforce the product line created by the C52x series.

The C532n was best suited to home and small office use, paper is fed from a tray or a manual feed slot. The C532dn aims more at office use, it has more of the features of the C534 but not the ability to use high yield cartridges. One of the distinguishing features between versions of recent printers is the value-proposition given by purchase price and running cost.

Other printers in the series have a numeric keypad used to enter a PIN and release jobs from the print queue. The C534 also has Pictbridge. The C534dn version has a tray and a multipurpose slot as well as the auto-duplex ability to print double sided.

The C532n costs less to buy than the C534. The trade-off is that it takes smaller cartridges so printing costs are a bit higher.

There is a lot of commonality of parts but the C524 high capacity cartridges can't be used in the C522 and Transfer Belt for the C53X is different to that for the C52X. The C53X fuser can be fitted in the C52X printers but the fusers from the C52X can't be used in the C53X.

The printers have abilities to take options such as the 500 sheet paper drawer. Users should see the user-manual and / or Lexmark's PDF outline for the relevant information. The main things that the C532n doesn't seem to have available is the hard-disk option and the Application Card / SIMMs.

The engine of the C52x / C53x series is called the 5022. There are four print cartridges arranged in a vertical stack delivering toner onto paper travelling on a transfer belt. Paper emerges through a fuser at the top. The paper can be reversed in the fuser exit roller and travel through a duplex path running down the front of the printer. The engine is very similar to the HP Color LaserJet 3600 / Canon LBP-5300 although they aren't the same thing in any way.

Control:

4-line 160 x 64 pixel All Points Addressable (APA) gray-scale display.

Direction arrows for menu navigation on all models. The LCD gives status messages, supplies messages and help screens. There are four navigation direction buttons and a centre button marked with a tick for "Select" or Go.

Duty Cycle:

75,000 pages per month. The rating for the C534 is higher, presumably because the larger cartridges give fewer cartridge insertion forces and suchlike.

Weight:

Weight (lb.) 57.0 lb. Weight (kg) 25.9 kg

These printers are quite heavy. Handling requires 2 people

Consumables:

The printer takes toners frequently, photoconductors less frequently, a waste toner box sometimes. It also needs a transfer belt and a fuser.

As with most colour laser printers a CMYK process is used. (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and blacK). A toner is needed for each colour. Users will often find that they use much more black than other toners simply because black text is much more readable and therefore most pages use more of it.

Because the C530, C532 and C534 belong to a series which offers printers for low to mid volume use there are different toner options. The small toner cartridges fit the whole range - but don't offer particularly attractive economics. The higher model number printers can take small cartridges but they can also take a cartridge intended to offer lower cost per page.

Lexmark also have:

  • Standard cartridges - sold with no restriction. They can be returned at no cost to Lexmark for recycling.
  • Return program cartridges should be used once then returned directly to Lexmark for remanufacturing or recycling. Lexmark will provide a freepost bag to do this. Cartridges may be refurbished but there is a discount on the price.

These printers give a warning that toner is low. The user manual suggests removing and shaking cartridges to get a bit more printing ability from them until print is persistently faded.

Waste Toner Box:

When the message "82 Waste Toner Box Neatly Full" appears it is nearing time to replace the box so make sure one is on order. When "82 Replace waste toner box " appears the box must be changed.

Note that page yields are given for printing with 5% page cover - normal for correspondence.

Photoconductor:

The message "Black PC Unit Life Warning or Cyan PC Unit Life Warning" (etc). A replacement photoconductor will shortly be needed. The single pack will suit situations where there is a big difference between black and colour use. The 4 pack will suit people doing mainly colour printing.

Transfer Kit:

The printer gives a message " Transfer belt life warning" when it is time to order a new belt. The actual remaining life is determined by environment, duty cycle and toner coverage. Be aware that although new belts can usually be delivered in a day or two shortages are possible.

Changing the transfer belt may change the alignment of the toner cartridges. The user manual recommends running the alignment procedure. Details are given in the user manual.

In brief:

1 With the printer off.

2 Hold the Go and right arrow buttons whilst turning the printer on.

3 Release the buttons only when message "performing self test" appears. The message "CONFIG MENU" appears

4 Press down arrow until the message reads "Color Alignment"

5 Press Go to print the alignment page.

6 Press down arrow until Set A appears and then press Go

7 From the printed sheet find the straightest of the 20 lines beside the letter A

8 Press left or right arrow until that number is displayed then press Go.

9 Repeat steps 6 through 8 to align sets A through L

10 Press Go

11 Press down arrow until "Exit Config Menu" appears and

12 Press Go again to exit.

Fuser:

The printer gives a "fuser life" message when the fuser will soon need replacing. When the message "Replace fuser" appears the fuser needs replacing. Lexmark original fusers have some documentation accompanying them.

Lexmark rather unusually make three different fusers for different regional voltages. Order the correct one which is 220-240V in Europe.

40X3571 (100V/50-60Hz) Fuser 40X3571

Maintenance Kit:

Lexmark use the term maintenance kit to cover the transfer kit and fuser.

Spares:

The printer will need the print cartridges, drums, transfer belt and fuser at intervals. The other parts regularly required are the pick rollers. Trays are vulnerable because paper is heavy and parts can snap.
