Service Info

Some idea of how the printer works can be seen in the cross-section.

LEX_C540

Toners and the Imaging unit that holds developers and photoconductors are intended to be customer replaceable.

Changing the ITU or fuser are likely to require the service manual

The service manual is Part Number 12G9819 for the 5025-2xx,4xx engine. At the time of writing (Feb 2014) it seems to be fairly readily available online)

Before attempting to work on the machine:
First disconnect the printer from the mains (line power) as potentially dangerous circuitry will be exposed with the printer covers removed. On this model the fuser and ITU belt are intended to be fitted by a technician.

Fitting a fuser

As a gauge of the difficulty this list of what needs to be done is drawn from chapter 4-27 of the service manual :

  1. Remove the right and left covers.
  2. Disconnect the two wire fuser cable from the LVPS unit
  3. Remove the grounding screw and washer from the right side of the frame, take care not to lose the grounding washer
  4. Disconnect the thermistor cables nearby.
  5. Remove the exit deflector and bin full sensor flag
  6. Remove the bin full sensor
  7. Unhook springs from both sides of the fuser
  8. Rotate the top of the fuser toward the front, slide it to the left and lift to remove it. Take care not to damage the fuser exit sensor.

To install a new fuser, reverse the process but note the following …

  1. Make sure as you install the fuser that the springs rest on the frame, if they hang down into the machine they can be difficult to locate.
  2. Avoid bumping into the fuser exit sensor on the left hand side
  3. Make sure the gears mesh on the right hand side.
  4. Reroute the wires as they were, damage to them creates a potential hazard and will be difficult to fix.

Fitting an Image Transfer Unit (ITU)

  1. Remove the right cover
  2. Remove the waste toner bottle
  3. Remove the imaging unit
  4. Disconnect the two springs from the side frames leaving the right one attached to the ITU
  5. Rotate the left spring and pivot cam out of the path of the ITU.
  6. Rotate the release lever counter-clockwise with needlenose pliers whilst at the same time pulling the ITU forwards and out.

Reverse these actions to install a new ITU

  1. Write down the 16 digit number of a new ITU before attempting to install it. the numeric value needs to be input through the control panel at the end of the procedure.
  2. The release lever may need rotating to install a new ITU. It should then slide into place.
  3. Enter the ITU number needs the printer diagnostic menu
    1. Press and hold Left arrow and Tick as you turn the printer on. Release the buttons when the memory amount is displayed.
    2. In the diagnostics menu select PRINTER SETUP
    3. Select ITU Barcode
    4. Enter the barcode number using the arrows to increment or decrement each digit and the select (tick) key to move on to the next.
    5. When the last digit is entered the printers says Submitting Changes
  4. If you make a mistake in the number that is detected by a checksum and the number has to be entered again.

As already suggested Lexmark intend parts to be fitted by a competent technician. The outline here is intended as a guide to the complexity of the job. The service manuals has a full write-up and pictures of the procedure.
