Lexmark C720 Color Laser Printer Technology (Model 5024-001)

An A4 / US letter colour printer using a carousel mechanism to give fast black printing at up to 24 pages per minute and colour printing at 6 pages per minute.

There are three models: a straightforward printer, a printer with a network port and a version with both the network port and a duplex unit.

The Lexmark C720 was launched in May 2001. The specification suggests it might compare with more recent printers for speed and still be in widespread use. In practice it had rather poor reviews. For print speed it is probably let down by the 266MHz processor and 32MB RAM on the base model - not enough for fast rendering of a page.

These printers also have a rather long list of consumable parts - as well as toners, photodeveloper, ITU and fusers there is an oil bottle and a corona charger to change. These parts probably contribute to the idea that the printer is unreliable and expensive to run

Print quality can be good when consumables are first installed but users complain that streaking and bleeding happen well before the toners and photo developers are exhausted greatly increasing the cost per page.

Lexmark apparently did themselves no favours by increasing the price of all the consumables substantially after a few months.

Control:

Users complain that the printer has a repertoir of error messages that seem to be undocumented.

Lexmark's claim of photo quality is let down by user experience of streaking and bleeding before the life of toners and photoconductors is exhausted.

Consumables:

The printer needs four toners, a 40,000 image photo developer kit, a corona charger, oil bottle, waste bottle, fuser cleaner and intermittently a transfer kit and a fuser kit. There are a couple more consumables than typical on a colour printer and that might explain the idea widespread in reviews that these printers are expensive to run. The fuser has a particularly short life.

One complaint is that consumables don't give much warning that they are about to run out before the printer stops working.
