Lexmark E320

A4 mono laser printer with a 16 page per minute rating aimed at the home and small office market. Small footprint machine with USB for convenience and a parallel port for compatability with older computers.

The printer design puts the main 150 sheet paper tray at the rear with an extendable paper support to hold pages up. There is also a single sheet manual feed. Paper passes through an L or C shaped path to emerge at the front output door or the top output bin.

There is an option for a second tray holding up to 250 sheets underneath the printer.

Model, type number and main features are:

  • E220, 4500-101 16ppm A4 600dpi "1200 Image Quality"
  • E320, 4500-001 16ppm A4 600dpi. 67MHz proc 4MB RAM (Max 68MB) . PCL5e, MAC compat. 1500 page starter.
  • E321, 4500-201 19 ppm A4 600dpi. 8MB RAM (Mac 72MB)PCL5e.
  • E322, 4500-002 16ppm A4 600dpi. 133MHz proc 8MB RAM (Max 72MB) . PCL6, PostScript. 3000 page standard. Linux support.
  • E322n, 4500-003 16ppm A4 600dpi. 133MHz proc 16MB RAM (Max 80MB) . PCL6, PostScript. 3000 page standard. Ethernet 10/100 Base-TX. Linux support.
  • E323, 4500-202 19ppm A4 600dpi. 12MB Max 144. PCL Linux support.
  • E323n, 4500-213 19 ppm A4 600dpi. 12MB PCL Linux support.

Lexmark pitch this model against the Brother HL-1440, OkiPage 14e and Xerox Docuprint P8EX.

The E220 E321, E323 and E323n seem to be later variants of the engine adjusting Lexmark's position against competitors. Particularly at the low cost end of the printer market very small changes in specification such as adding some extra memory can make a big difference in sales.

The E320 comes with a 1500 page starter cartridge and the others with a standard 3,000 page cartridge. Toners are "chipped" against refilling.

The E322n needs the extra memory to handle the network but with 16MB it will normally be enough to handle pages at full speed.

The E320 has PCL 5e and a basic Mac-compatible postscript (it might not work with Linux). The E322 come with Lexmark's standard PostScript Level 2 emulation, PPDS and PCL6.

The US part number for the E320 is 08A0150 UPC 7-34646-51105-6 (its sometimes helpful to have this for research).

Incidentally the E332 rather sounds as though it would be part of this series - but is a completely different and bigger 26 ppm engine.

Control:

A set of six lights and one button. As usual most of the control features are given by the Windows driver.

The lights communicate basic status and service information and can show more detailed error codes. All lights flashing unidactes a primary service error. Pressing and releasing the button gives a secondary code. For instance fuser under-temperature is "press button" and "toner low".

"Lexmark say Easy-to-use and intuitive op panel clearly shows the status of your printer and status of low-toner levels."

Duty Cycle:

10,000 Pages per month. This kind of printer is more usually asked to handle under 1,000 pages per month but given the speed and cartridge size. this printer might be used for parish newsletters and suchlike.

16 pages per minute printing and a less than 12-second time to first print

1200 Image Quality, 300 x 300 dpi, 600 x 600 dpi

Paper Handling:

100-Sheet Output Tray , 150-Sheet Input Tray, Manual Duplex, Single Sheet Exit, Single Sheet Manual Feed Slot. Optional 250 sheet drawer sits under the printer.

Media sizes:letter, legal, A4, A5, JIS B5 and executive.

Media types:Plain paper, envelopes, card stock, paper labels and transparencies.

Media weights:Plain paper: 16 to 43 lb. (60 to 163 g/m2)

Card stock:up to 90 lb. index (163 g/m2)

Tray 1:150-Sheet Input tray at the top rear of the printer.

Single Sheet:There is a single sheet feed for media like envelopes, letterhead and transparencies. Heavier media may need to exit through the front exit slot to minimise the likelihood of a paper jam.

Optional Tray:A 250 sheet optional tray mounts under the printer.

Face Down:

At the top front of the printer.

Face Up:

At the lower front of the printer

Processor:

67MHz processor on the E320. The E322 has a 133MHz processor and more memory giving it more ability to work at full speed when handling graphics.

Memory:

Standard 4 MB on the basic model Maximum 68 MB

The E322 has 8MB and a maximum of 72MB

The E322n has 16MB and a maximum of 72 MB

Interface:

Both USB and Parallel ports. The user can disable the USB or parallel port in some models freeing memory to be used by print jobs. The service manual gives information on how to do this and how to set the parallel port operation mode.

Network:

The E322n has a 10/100Base TX (RJ45 port) for network connection.

PCL 5e Emulation on the E320 together with a MAC-compatible limited version of PostScript. The E322 and E322n have PCL6 and Lexmark's standard Postscript emulation.

System Compatability:

Windows and Mac as standard. The E322 has Postscript and should be Linux compatible but there is no driver explicitly for it in CUPS.

Dimensions:

221 x 380 x 362 mm - 8.7 x 15 x 14.2 " inches

(or the service manual says 221 x 380 x 368 mm - 8.7 x 15 x 14.5 inches)

Clearance of 300mm (12 inches) at the sides and front and 500mm ( 20) inches at the rear and 200mm (8 inches) at the top is needed. - although the printer is small it isn't very well suited to working on a shelf.
