Lexmark MS810, MS811 and MS812 series printers
Long lasting imaging unit, toner life up to 45,000 pages, 70 page per minute throughput and a business workflow strategy are some of the Lexmark MS81x series strengths.
The Lexmark MS810, MS811 and MS812 series are mono laser printers providing fast, reliable, clear print for workgroups and production purposes. Launched in 2012 these machines form the "high-end" of a new Lexmark printer range with speeds from 35 to 70 pages per minute. Where speed is critical the MS-812 workrate of 70 pages per minute beats anything else on the market. Lexmark have matched the speed with toner and paper handling accessories similar to those on a large copier. In the MX
series guise this print engine includes the scanner and copier feature-set.
Toners come in a choice of sizes, 6000 page, 25,000 page and some of the printers will take unusually large 45,000 page cartridges.
What They Replace
Lexmark see the MS range replacing the "T" range. The new printers offer higher speeds, significantly better first page out time, more intuitive operator panels and bigger cartridges.
- T650, 45 ppm -> MS810 55ppm
- T652, 50 ppm -> MS810 55ppm
- T654, 55 ppm -> MS811 63ppm
- T656, 55 ppm -> MS812 70ppm
Paper handling accessories include 250, 550 and 2100 sheet paper feeders, a 4 bin stacker and a stapler-stacker.
The pure-play printers in the MS range can be coupled with the MX6500e MFP option - an A3/tabloid scanner with it's own big 10.2 inch colour touch screen.
The MX
range are multifunction printer copiers straight out of the box.
Furthermore these printers can act as workflow terminals. The big screens are not just decoration, they provide a gateway to a comprehensive office automation approach.
The MS/MX range are based on new engines. Styling is similar to the T650 series, with an emphasis on bigger, more informative colour control panels. The MS810de and MS812de printers have touch screens and Solutions capability
. Lexmark has been investing heavily in document workflow
and now owns Perceptive Software
one of the main players in content management and workflow systems.
MS & MX ranges
- MS range are fairly straightforward printers - although some have big touch-screens to allow user-friendly access to print and workflow tasks usually based on network access.
- MX range are multifunction scanner/copier/fax machines. The basic difference is that these printers have a scanner on top, usually accompanied by an even bigger touchscreen.
- There are M and XM ranges as well, intended for sale by Lexmark's Business Solutions Dealers. They are similar to the other two ranges but may add (or subtract) features. The deal depends on the dealer, managed print contract or software house providing the machine. Lexmark seem keen to build relationships that go beyond mere printing.
2-Piece Supplies
Lexmark has competition in the high-speed A4 printer market. The leader is HP with the LaserJet 600 M601 , M602 and M603 machines, Lexmark outshines each on speed. Samsung have the SCX-6545 A4 copier; they don't bother with a print-only version. Again Lexmark's offering is faster but the low copy price is a point in Samsung's favour, achieved using a separate toner and drum. Lexmark have tried single-piece cartridges like Canon and HP in the past. With this printer they have opted clearly into the two-piece camp.
Every printer in the new Lexmark range has a separate toner cartridge and imaging unit. This gives less environmental impact and the potential for lower operating costs. The imaging unit (essentially a developer and drum) last for 100,000 pages. Toners are available in 6k, 25k and for the MS811, MS812 and the MX multifunction machines Extra High Yield
45,000 page types. Lexmark toners, drums and the fusers are covered by their "returns program".
Lexmark have decided to bring the printer to a hard stop when a toner, imaging unit or fuser unit reaches the end of it's rated life. The printer won't continue until the supply is replaced. This departs from the customary "shake the toner until print fades" approach and probably reflects the needs of software houses and help-desks. Call-outs are too often caused by users ignoring the toner low warning. With the new Lexmark, they get good warning, then the printer stops. The behaviour can be changed, but many of Lexmark's partners and business organisations will probably prefer this clarity.
At the time of writing (March 2014) there are at least 19 varieties of the printer

Business Mission
Lexmark offered products to the whole printer market until a couple of years ago; now they are focussed on business needs. They dropped inkjet products, and in 2013 sold the business, factory and 1500 patents to manufacturing partners Funai for $100 million - the research team of 50 are still based on the Lexmark campus. Lexmark are shifting focus to document and content management software. In 2010 they bought US content management company Perceptive Software
and half a dozen acquisitions since then show a continuing strategy. Multifunction printers fit into this broader strategy. Lexmark's lowest priced printers now have a street price around £170 in the UK (Lexmark sell them online for $154 in the US). Clearly these machines are business oriented.
The new engines are all based on dual-core ARM chips running at 800MHz with the option to expand the memory to 2.5GB. Engine resolutions are 1200x1200 dpi. All printers have Ethernet built in, except the MS310d.
Fusers are "belt" based giving high print speeds, energy saving and rapid first page out. (There are a couple of special exceptions where roller fusers are retained for jobs like labelling and ticketing).
All the printers use a new "Unison" polyester based toner.
The new models replace the E, T and X series.
MS710 and MS711
The MS710 and MS711 are intended for certain kinds of retail and manufacturing rather than for conventional office tasks. Lexmark and many other printer manufacturers have switched to using a "film", foil, sleeve, or as Lexmark choose to call it a "belt" in their fusers. This change brings benefits of faster response to print commands and lower energy consumption.
The drawback to using a fuser belt is that some unusual types of media cause premature fuser wear. If the printer handles a lot of narrow media print jobs like price tickets the belt develops "edgewear" - fractures where the edges of the narrow material pass. To meet the needs of these customers Lexmark have retained the hot-roller design in the MS710 and MS-711. Unfortunately it is a different model of printer, it isn't just a matter of changing the fuser because there are differences in fuser shape, motor drive and presumably firmware.
MS810 series
The Lexmark MS810 series are based on Lexmark's biggest mono print engine. Black and white printing is still widely preferred in business (see below ).
MS810 Series Speed
- MS810 - 55 ppm
- MS811 - 63 ppm
- MS812 - 70 ppm
The MS810, MS811 and MS812 basically differ in speed, with the MS811 and MS812 also able to take gigantic 45,000 page cartridges.
All printer models are available with Lexmark's e-Task touch screen which allows easy configuration and lets users select pre-configured tasks from the printer screen. The MS812 can have the larger 7 inch touch screen.
The printers can be accompanied by the MX6500e MFP option - an A3/tabloid scanner with Duplex ADF, 10.2 inch touchscreen, scan to network, scan to SharePoint and barcode discovery.
The MX710 and MX810 come as ready made multifunction machines with an A4/ US-letter scanner on top. This highly flexible configuration will probably be the bestseller.
The MX710 MX711 series tend to be desktop machines; lower models have the 7 inch touch screen and 50 or 63 ppm print speeds with hard-disk storage as an option. (It is rather confusing that Lexmark have used the "710" range to mean special-purpose in printers and simply "smaller" in MFPs - but they aren't the only manufacturer to have confusing model names. )
The MX810, MX811 and MX812 series tend to be floor-standing and all have the 10.2" Color Touch Screen and can take the Extra-High Yield cartridge. Again the series number relates to print speed - they are all just a fraction slower than the equivalent MS-model, possibly because of the built in scanner, or perhaps lack of competitive pressure.

Mono Print
Black and White or "mono" is widely preferred for business documents. It is cheaper. It isn't just a matter of black toner powder being a rather unexciting material, and the print process being little more than rollers, which means laser printers are preferred over inkjets. The reliability and fixability of mono laser printers will always be better than colour can achieve.
Control:
Despite what was just said about costs …
Colour can enhance understanding. All the MS810 series printer control panels feature a colour display.
Models with an "e" in their suffix have the e-touch screens. The printers have these in two sizes, 4.3 inches on most models and the MS812de at the top of the range has a 7 inch touch screen.
The MX series of multifunction printers have an even bigger 10 inch screen.
Lexmark call their tablet-like control panel an e-Task touch screen, which fits in with the model-suffix "e" and the "eSF" branding of firmware and apps. Constant repetition of minor branding seems a bit redundant. They seem to drop the letter "n" for network if the printer has the touch-screen - (it wouldn't be much use without a network).
One purpose of the touch sensitive screens is obviously to offer context-sensitive menus and help-screens but Lexmark's objectives clearly go beyond that. The touch panels allow printers to work with the Lexmark Embedded Solution Framework (eSF) which allow applications to run directly on the printer, eliminating the need for server-based application to support workflow.

Security Features:
As you might expect with one of the US Government's favoured suppliers Lexmark have gone to some trouble to establish their security credentials. Common Criteria Consulting LLC
have prepared a 62 page analysis of the printers.

and it's available as a PDF from the Lexmark website.
Lexmark Say:
Enjoy the peace of mind of enterprise-level security. Authenticate, authorize and audit employee usage with comprehensive security tools. Lock down sensitive data with standard network security protocols, data encryption and disk wiping capabilities. Then, evaluate by tracking more than 100 variables and events, including user activity with Audit Logging.
Duty Cycle:
Model and Speed
With MX machines it seems to be form-factor that determines the model number and speed is secondary.
Desktop Machines
- MX710 -63 ppm
- MX711 -70 ppm
Floorstanding Machines
- MX810 - 55ppm
- MX811 - 63ppm
- MX812 - 70ppm
Print Speed:
Lexmark have adopted the modern trend to dividing the market into three tiers with speed one of the criteria.
- MS810 - 55 ppm
- MS811 - 63 ppm, also takes larger cartridges
- MS812 - 70 ppm, takes the larger cartridges and available with a big screen.
Firmware rather than hardware is the difference between the models. The MS810 just runs the print processes a bit more slowly.
Print Resolution:
Print resolution 600 x 600 and 1200 x 1200 dpi.
The Lexmark MX711 series incorporate and ADF unit and scanner giving a multifunction copier, note the larger touch-screen control panel.
… the MX810 looks like a copier.
Multifunction / Scanner Abilities
As mentioned above the "MS" series are printers, but they can be accompanied by the very full features MX6500e MFP option which will normally go on a desk alongside.
Most people who want a copier-equivalent machine will buy the MX810, MX811 or MX812 depending on the top speed required. The scanner is A4 / US-Letter sized, rated for duplex scanning at up to 70 sides per minute black, simplex at 67ppm and colour 300x300 ppi at similar speeds.
Although the scanner doesn't quite match the full rated speed of the printers it's still a pretty creditable performance. The scanners built into MFPs are often very much slower on duplex, and slower still in colour.
Fax
All the MFP models can be equipped with a fax, it changes the specific model number. Lexmark rather oddly don't seem to have allocated a letter for faxes in their naming conventions, "f" stands for finisher not fax. So it is actually difficult to tell from the number whether a printer actually has a fax board in it. It is fair to say that only government offices seem interested in faxing these days, presumably because it's still built into their procedures.
Paper Handling:
Processor:
Lexmark are generous with both processor power and memory in their new printer range. Processor and memory power have been costly in the past and some manufacturers still cut the specification to the bone. Lexmark are aiming these printers at "enterprise class" businesses
All Lexmark's MS, CS and MX printers now use a dual-core ARM processor, running at 800MHz.
Memory:
Memory: 512 MB built in as standard on the MS71x and MS81x models.
Maximum memory 2.56GB DDR3.
Memory format is 204 pin DDR3x32 SO-DIMM. Lexmark have 1GB and 2GB modules available as follows:
40X7567 | DDR3-256Mx32 1GB-400MHZ RAM card. |
40X7445 | DDR3-512Mx32 2GB RAM card. |
Lexmark service manual also mentions these but the Spec doesn't agree with the study guide.
40X7566 | DDR3-256Mx16 512MB-400MHZ RAM card. |
40X6522 | DDR3-512Mx16 1GB-400MHZ RAM card. |
Hard disk is built in on some MX models. It is optional on the MS71x and MS81x models. For pure print purposes a hard disk is almost invariably unnecessary but if the printer is used to store forms or jobs to be released with a PIN then it becomes useful.
A 256MB flash memory option is also available. Falsh memory tends to be used for things like forms and workflow processes.

Viewing the Ink Levels
Separate toners and imaging units can be a bit worrying - will there be enough life in the drum for a big print job?
Remember: You can get the part numbers by printing the supplies guide.
Consumables:
Lexmark use a two-piece print mechanism; there is a toner cartridge and this sits on an imaging unit which holds the developer and OPC drum. By contrast, HP and Canon almost always use All-In-One cartridges which have the toner and developer wrapped up in a single cartridge.
The merit of Lexmark's approach is that it looks more environment-friendly. Developers and drums are actually the main complexity in a cartridge, they can last a long time and in this case the Lexmark imaging unit lasts 100,000 pages. The biggest "90X" cartridge for HP's M602 printer lasts just 24,000 pages and at that point the developer and drum could have some life in them (a point not lost on refillers).
Lexmark's approach ought to be less costly as well, but that isn't what we find. The HP 90X cartridge is £295 on their UK web site; but vicious competition means it has a "street price" about £166. The problem is that the equivalent Lexmark device costs £392.90 I and the street price is £254. Corporate deals might redress the balance a bit - but it is difficult to see the justification for the Lexmark open market price. Lexmark's argument would no doubt be about "total cost of ownership" and quality.
Toner
The MS811 and MS812 offer three different sizes of cartridge: standard, high-yield and extra-high yield.
All the printers use a new "Unison" polyester based toner with about 10% iron oxide and a small percentage of wax. The colouring is 1% carbon black. Whilst the formula is "secret" the main ingredients are pretty much standard for all black toners.
Lexmark offer return-program cartridges as standard. This solves recycling problems - Lexmark will take the cartridge. For buyers this might be a "job done" tickbox on their environment assessment - Lexmark take cartridges, imaging units and fusers back for recycling. They even offer money off the purchase price as an incentive.
The story isn't all win-win through. Lexmark's returns program denies other recyclers a source of "cores" - cartridges to be refilled. Shifting individual cores back to Lexmark isn't a very effective use of transport, either; the charity recycling box is inherently better. Lexmark aren't alone in trying to do this but their position is a bit unusual. The box that holds toner is usually protected by a forest of patent and copyright claims. Copying a cartridge is generally regarded as illegal, but refilling it legal.
Lexmark seem unusually determined to defeat the refillers; they have claimed in the courts that:
- not returning cores to them is a breach of contract
- refilling their cartridges breaches their patents
In practice what this means is that there are very few remanufactured cartridges on the UK market - and it probably isn't just a coincidence that Lexmark's toner cartridges are rather expensive.
So whilst the returns program is sometimes said to be "a great way to save money on printing" the saving might seem a bit paltry compared with the benefit Lexmark get by removing refills from the market - about £5 on an £ 250 cartridge. The saving on the imaging unit is rather more encouraging £18 or so.
There is a cartridge and imaging unit recycling market. Both Uninet and Static Control offer alternative toners and chips. If you want to recycle Lexmark toners then contact a local re-filler. If we must use print cartridges then locally sourced refills will be environmental best practice.
Cartridges are generally offered in return-program form. The box contains freepost information to help post it back to Lexmark for recycling.
You get a saving over Lexmark's price for non-return program cartridge. Lexmark seem to call the non-returns type "corporate" - presumably some of the large users like Lexmark printers but have rebelled at the prices and are getting cartridges refilled. The corporate cartridges are rather less common in online sales than the returns program type.

MS810 Series Toner MX810 Toner
Fuser & Maintenance Kits -Explanation
The MS71x, MX71x, MS81x MX81x fusers can use two different heating technologies. Most use a polymide belt with a ceramic heater, this allows the printer to run at high speed - the MS812 is one of the fastest office machines on the market. However the MS71x series use a hot roller with a heating lamp; this makes them a bit slower but allows them to work with a broader range of media. They will work better with narrow media and vinyl labels such as those used for product labelling. The two fusers differ in shape and drive motors so they are not exchangeable.
A4 or Letter
Rather unusually, the printers are made in either A4 or "letter" form. US letter stationery is slightly wider but shorter than A4. As with most laser printers on the market these printers can use either type of paper. A problem noted with fusers that can take letter but are frequently used with A4 is called "edgewear" - the fuser gets worn by a pressure point caused by paper a bit narrower than it's heater. To avoid this Lexmark make an A4 fuser for people who don't expect to use US-letter and a "letter" type for those who do.
The Letter fuser will correctly fuse both letter and A4 documents, but it will slow down with A4 so as to reduce wear.
The A4 fuser will not quite fuse to the margins of the paper if letter stationery is used.
Chipped Fuser
Somewhat unusually, the fuser is "chipped". This means the printer knows what kind of fuser it has, whether it is a genuine Lexmark item and that the fuser has been replaced.
As with cartridges we expect the "refill" market to make clone chips. Presumably replacement belts and heaters will also materialise on the market - as they have for HP/Canon engines.
Maintenance Kits
When the Lexmark MS81x series printers Display "80 Sheduled Maintenance" the maintenance kit needs to be replaced. After a grace period during which it gives further warnings the printer will stop working showing "80.3x" until the kit is replaced.
The Maintenance kit and fuser are "Customer Replaceable Unit" (CRU) as are all the parts likely to wear out. The good news is the process is easy (and the bad news is Lexmark won't do it for you under a maintenance contract). Organisations with an IT support department might get their own technicians to do it, as things that are unfamiliar can upset office routine. As it happens, changing the maintenance kit is a good time to clean and examine the printer.
There are 16 types of kit and 6 of them are available in the UK. The existing fuser is labelled on the front and back - most distinctly on the front. To get the right kit (or fuser):
Open the front cover, remove the cartridge and the imaging unit and look on the fuser frame. At the right hand side above the entry into the fuser there is a cutout in the plastic with a 2 digit number. The two digit number gives the type for the replacement fuser.
The Embedded Web Server (EWS) also gives the fuser type. Point your browser at the printer's address on your network. Log into EWS. Under the Reports button on the left Select Device Information. About 14 items down the list is the fuser type.
The same number is visible on the rear of the fuser in large type on the serial number label. Because of the serial number and a production number users could conceivably be misled.
Order a maintenance kit or fuser of the same type.
In the UK that is almost certainly Type 01

Resetting the Roller Kit counter
The fuser contans an ID chip which resets its use counter. If the rollers are replaced at the same time with a maintenance kit the count will also be reset (?)
If the fuser is replaced but the rollers are not, the roller count will later need resetting.
After replacing a roller kit, the roller kit counter must be reset to zero to clear the “81 Replace Roller kit” message.
To reset the maintenance count:
- 1 Turn off the printer.
- 2 Enter the Configuration Menu.
- a Press and hold the 2 and 6 buttons simultaneously.
- b Turn on the printer.
- c Release the buttons after 10 seconds. The Configuration Menu appears on the LCD.
- 3 Touch Reset Roller Kit Counter from the Configuration Menu.
- 4 From the options displayed, select which roller kit to reset.
- 5 Touch Yes to reset the roller kit counter value. Touch No or Back to return to the previous menu.
The roller kit count resets to zero, and the LCD returns to the Configuration Menu.

Service
Lexmark do sell onsite maintenance contracts with street prices ranging from £70 to about £300. That excludes the user changeable parts of course and since they include cartridge, imaging unit, fuser, pickup arm and accidental damage we can wonder what it amounts to other than a phone support contract.
All the parts liable to wear have been given defined lives and are user changeable

Power On Sequence
When you turn the printer on, it performs a Power-on Reset (POR) sequence. Check for correct POR functioning of the base printer by observing the following:
- The LED turns on.
- The main fan turns on.
- The operator panel turns on.
- The fuser heater turns on. The fuser takes longer to warm up from a cold start than a warm start.
- The operator panel LED starts blinking.
- A splash screen appears on the display. The following errors or messages may appear:
- Close Door or Insert Cartridge appear if the front access door is open or the print cartridge is missing
- Cartridge errors, such as Defective Cartridge or Missing Cartridge
- Ready appears on the display.
- The main drive motor turns on.
- The EP drive assembly drives the developer shaft located in the print cartridge.
- The exit rollers turn.
- The printer may begin calibration.
Safe Mode
The printer has a "safe mode" which attempts to provide printing service even if there appears to be a fault.
Safe Mode engine features | Engine behaviour | Control panel behaviour |

The service manual has several pages on fixing print problems after page 37
Bugs
As with all recent printers, Lexmark strongly recommend downloading the latest firmware revision when the printer is installed. If there seems to be an issue with the printer or accessories it is almost invariably a good idea to have the latest firmware as problems seen by others may already have been fixed.

Options and Accessories:
The printers can take the following options:
2100‐sheet tray | None |
550‐sheet tray | 250‐sheet tray |
250‐sheet tray | 550‐sheet tray |
4‐bin mailbox | Output expander |
Output expander | 4‐bin mailbox |
Caster base |
In a configuration with two or more optional finishers: |
The staple finisher must always be on top. |
The high‐capacity output expander must always be at the bottom. |
The output expander is the only finisher that can be placed on top of the high‐capacity output expander. |
The output expander and mailbox may be installed in any order. |
Always use a caster base when the printer is configured with a 2100‐sheet tray. |
The 2100‐sheet tray must always be at the bottom of a configuration. |
A maximum of four optional trays may be configured with the printer. |
The optional 250‐ and 550‐sheet trays may be installed in any order. |
Oddly, the manual says; Lexmark C792 printers support only Lexmark C792 paper‐handling options. These options are not compatible with any other Lexmark printer. (Presumably someone managed to get the wrong bit of content management into the MS810 manual - copy and paste errors, don't you just love them!
