Lexmark Optra S 1250 - 2450 and SE3455

The Optra S series was first introduced in May 1997 as an entirely new engine called the "4059". Printer names give the speeds - the 1250 is 12 pages per minute, 1650 is 16 ppm and 2450 is 24ppm. The series proved succesful and new models were introduced over the next few years. There are about 10 printers based on the 4059 engine, each with a network variant. The same engine was used by Genicom, Unisys and Tally as the basis for their own printers.

The 4059 engine and the "S" series were succeeded by the 4069 and the "T" series.

The print engine has a maximum resolution of 1200x1200 dpi. Early models are limited by processor and memory capabilities so the 2450 achieves full speed at 300 or 600 dpi; it won't print photos at 1200dpi at 24 pages per minute. The 1625 slows to 8ppm at 1200dpi. The 2455 has a faster 133MHz processor and publicity says "even most complex jobs printing at or near rated engine speed".

The printer is highly expandable with 2 extra trays, a duplex unit and an envelope feeder when it was introduced. Later models could take 4 trays, duplex, envelope feeder and 3 x 500 sheet output expanders. Since the printers were discontinued some time ago accessories may no longer be available or only as refurbished items.

This series of Lexmark printers largely take the same large cartridges. The basic cartridge holds 200 grams and prints 7,500 pages. The high capacity cartridge holds 500 grams and prints 17,600 pages. The exceptions is the Se3455 which has it's own cartridge.

Duty Cycle:

Quoted duty cycle varies from 35,000 pages per month for the S 1250 and 1255 to 100,000 pages per month for the S 2420 and 150,000 pages for the Se3455.

Many of the components are common between the printers so the difference in duty cycle figures presumably reflects what Lexmark were willing to support under warranty rather than any difference in printer construction.

Maintenance interval is given as 250,000 pages for all models - the life of the fuser. It is intended that the fuser and paper path rollers be changed at the same time.

Print speed on these printers varies with model from 12 pages per minute (which may be further limited on complex pages by processor abilities ) to 34ppm for the Se3455.

The engine is capable of a 1200x1200 dpi print resolution. On older models such as the 2450 it might more normally run in 300 or 600 dpi mode due to limitations of processing power. The 2455 will usually deliver 1200dpi documents at full engine speed.

Paper Handling:

The Paper path is A4 or US letter sized.

The basic printer has a 250 sheet input tray and a fold-down multipurpose feeder. Output is to the top of the printer. Higher model numbers can take more options.

Different models have faster processors ranging from a 33MHz device in the 1250 and 1620 to a 133MHz device in the 2455.

Power:

There are models for the European 220 to 240 volt power and for The US (120V) and Japan (100 Volt)

Power Consumption:

Not known. These printers have an old design and keeping the fuser hot will consume significant power. Turning machines off when they are not used would be a definite benefit.

Consumables:

All Optra S printers use the same cartridges. These are available with the standard capacity of 7,500 pages and with a high capacity of 17,600 pages. The two cartridges are very similar but the toner weight is 200 grams in the standard device and 500 grams in the high capacity unit. Some mechanisms are different in the cartridges, notably the encoder wheel which is part of the toner sensor.

The diamond fine cartridge improves graphics printing, particularly faint echoes of images which can sometimes repeat down the page using ordinary cartridges that work perfectly well with text (See PartsNow ST1099).

Lexmark Return Program Cartridges are sold at a discount in exchange for the customers agreement to use the cartridge once then return it to Lexmark for recycling.

Fuser:

Fusers adhere toner to pages using a combination of heat and pressure. The fuser in the 4059 engine printers is fairly conventional with a heated roller that has a hot lamp down it's centre and a pressure roller underneath. Faster printers use a more powerful heater because they need to raise more paper to printing temperature in a short period of time.

Lexmark make fusers in three series:

  • a 100 volt series for Japan
  • a 120 Volt series for the US
  • a 220 Volt series for the UK and Europe.

Maintenance Kit:

The printer LCD will give the message "80 Scheduled Maintenance" after it has printed 250,000 pages. At this point the fuser assembly, transfer roller, compensator pick rolls and charge roll should all be changed.
