Lexmark T420D and T420DN

A4 monochrome laser printer with a space-saving small footprint. Launched in 2003 the printer was aimed at departmental and small business users. Up to 22 pages per minute throughput with resolution up to 1200dpi.

Lemark's positioning of the printer in their "T" series reflects the printers role as a business machine. There is no common heritage with the other "T" printers. The engine used is the "4048" and the T420 in January 2003, then the X422; it was then used for the T430 in October 2004.

Lemarks press releases at the time pitch the T420D directly at the HP LJ 2200 giving it the same price point but with the big advantage of duplex capability.

It also had more memory, a faster processor and more memory. HP did have some advantage from true 1200 dpi output.

The T420 also appears in multifunction form as the X422.

Lexmark's publicity says:

  • Exceptional performance - Fast 22-page per minute output, with first page produced in 10 seconds -16 MB of memory for complex applications
  • Convenient features - Space saving design maximizes office space -Robust capability supports up to 50,000 pages per month
  • Easy to use - High-yield single element toner cartridge greatly reduces the intervention rate - Standard automatic duplex for added flexibility and paper savings

The T series are a group of printers aimed at office workgroups. The basis of the group is the T610, T520, T620 and T630 families which all developed from the same root. The T420 shares very little with those machines, they aren't the same engine and aren't as expandable. The print languages supported are intended to work alongside the other members of the "T" series.

Control:

Continue and Cancel buttons.

Lights for Ready / Data, Toner Low, Load / Remove Paper, Paper Jam, Error and Press Continue.

Paper source, paper size and orientation cannot be controlled from this limited control panel. They are set using the driver or toolkit on the host computer.

The pattern of lights can also indicate primary and secondary error codes.

Duty Cycle:

50,000 pages per month. This is lower than that for the larger "T" series machines but still robust for a desktop printer.

Print Speed (letter, black) - Up to 22 pages per minute

Print Speed (letter, black) - Duplex Up to 12 page sides per minute

Print Speed (A4, black) - Up to 21 pages per minute

PCL 6 Emulation, Personal Printer Data Stream (PPDS), PostScript 3 Emulation

On the PCL Emulation Lexmark's service manual says: PCL 6 emulation includes the PCL 5e and PCL XL interpreters, and is fully compatible with Hewlett Packards LaserJet 5 Family. Furthermore, the printer PCL emulation is backward compatible with the OptraTM T 610/612/614/616 and other members of Lexmarks Optra family of laser printers.

On the PostScript Emulation "Supports version 3010 of the Adobe definition of PostScript 3, and the interpreter is backward compatible with the Optra T 610/612/614/616 and other members of Lexmarks Optra family of laser printers.

(Incidentally the Service Manual says its a PostScript Level 2 emulation in the table on page 1-7 and then contradicts itself and says PostScript 3 underneath.)

PPDS is not much used outside the IBM systems community and is turned off by default.

Font Selection: 84 scalable PCL fonts; 2 PCL bitmap fonts; 39 scalable PPDS fonts; 5 PPDS bitmap fonts; 89 scalable PostScript fonts; OCR-A, OCR-B scalable PCL 5e fonts; Chinese and Japanese Font DIMMs; Fonts and Symbols Sets for Lexmark T52x, T62x, W812 and W820.

Maintenance Kit:

The control panel shows the message '80 Scheduled Maintenance' at a fixed page count interval. To maintain print quality it may be necessary to change the fuser, charge roller, transfer roller and pick tyres. Service technicians also usually give the printer a general cleaning. Parts for the maintenance task are available as a kit. After fitting the kit the maintenance count has to be reset to clear the "80" message.

Service:

We offer repair in North East England. We are researching service and repair options for these printers.

Options:

The printers are old and whilst they are still widely used optional parts such as trays and paper stackers are no longer likely to be available new. (Memory probably is)
