Lexmark Optra T610/T610n

The Lexmark Optra T series are reliable A4 laser printers.

T610, T612, T614 and T616 each have a twin with an embedded N2000 network interface so the T610n is the network version of the printer. This group of printers all launched in September 1999 and proved popular. They are still used: the speeds of around 20ppm and maximum 1200 dpi resolution aren't greatly bettered by modern machines.

The design is drifting toward obsolescence because these printers:

  • Can't print their full 1200 dpi resolution at their full rated speed.
  • Don't have enough base RAM to print full page photo's and bitmapped pdf's reliably.

The limiting factor is probably availability of parts. Lexmark don't have quite the control other manufacturers exercise here because Nupro manufacture equivalent fusers.

The printer's ID and serial number are on the underside of the front flap where the cartridge loads.

The machine was also available as a multifunction printer / copier as the X620e; It came with a Lexmark 3100 or 3200 scanner on top.

Network ready models come with a 10/100 Base TX Ethernet and extra memory. Token ring was an option. The network version model name ends in an n as in "Optra T 612n, 4069-21n"; the network version sometimes has more RAM as well.

The faster performance of The higher numbered printers reflects a faster RISC processor which can be from 133 to 220MHZ and more base RAM which can be from 4MB to 16MB expandable to 208MB.

These printers use emulations of the standard languages PostScript3 and PCL 6 so they are easy to use. The PostScript emulation gave the printer extra value because it allows it to work with just about any system. There are reports that Lexmark's implementation of PostScript sometimes does not match Adobe PostScript 3, Lexmark's argument being that they actually got it right.

To create the "T" series Lexmark drew heavily on the design of it's "S" series predecessors. This gave them a fast reliable printer to compete with the likes of the HP LaserJet 4000, 4100 and so forth. Subsequently Lexmark produced the T620 and T630 series based on a similar revision of the engine. The T640 introduced in 2005 was the first clear break with this family.

Control:

The printer operator panel, on the front left-side of the printer, has a 2-line by 16-character liquid crystal display (LCD), five buttons, and one indicator light.

Duty Cycle:

Maximum of 65,000 pages per month

Up to 15 pages per minute according to manufacturer figures. Many independent sources verify that the printer can deliver 12ppm in most circumstances. Less than 12 seconds to first page out.

True 1200 x 1200 dpi, 1200 Image Quality. Selectable resolutions from 300 to 1200 dpi. 600 x 600 dpi with PQET, 300 x 300 dpi with PQET

Paper Handling:

These printers have the usual arrangement of a fold-down multifunction tray and a cassette sliding into the printer base. Input (std/max): 350/3,350.

Output (std/max): 250/250

Multipurpose feeder tray :100 Sheet Multipurpose feeder tray. This tray is called MP Feeder on lexmark documentation and in software.

Tray 1:Integrated tray under the printer

Tray 2, 3, 4 and 5:Tray 2,3 and 4 are 250 or 500 sheet trays. There can be a 200 sheet drawers as tray 5

Face Down:

Paper normally exits to a face down tray on top of the printer.

Consumables:

These printers take a single piece print catridge containing toner, developer and photoconductor drum but not the pre-charge roller. Printers also need a maintenance kit or a new fuser at intervals of 300,000 pages.

Fuser:

Printers give the message "80 Scheduled Maintenance" after printing 300,000 pages and at this point the fuser needs replacing. It is normally preferable to buy a maintenance kit rather than a simple fuser because the kit comes with other parts that wear out and often need replacing at the same time - notably the rollers. Maintenance Kit:

Maintenance kits include transfer roller, charge roller and fuser. Kit installation is recommended every 300,000 pages.

Printers give the message "80 Scheduled Maintenance" after printing 300,000 pages and at this point the fuser and other components normally need replacement. After the parts are replaced the maintenance count must be reset to clear the message and continue printing normally.

Note that fusers and maintenance kits are sometimes refered to as "engineer changeable consumables" and are typically fitted by technicians with experience of printers.

Lexmark maintence kits supply a removal tool to pull the transfer roller out of its mounting however it can easily be sprung out of its mount using a screwdriver.

Whats-in-the-box:

Printers are no longer current and likely to be available "as is" from brokers and refurbishers. User manuals (and service manuals) are fairly readily available online. Recent Windows and Linux systems have the drivers pre-installed.

Warranty:

Old printers - Unlikely that they are covered by a warranty.

Service:

We are researching contract maintenance options at present. Repair is available in North East England.

Options:

These printers had quite a range of optional paper handling and other add-ons but it is doubtful whether many are still available.
