Lexmark T634 and T634N

Lexmark T634 and T634n are A4 monochrome laser printers or workgroup use. Throughput is up to 45 pages per minute and this is matched with a wide range of input and output options. The "n" version is the same machine with an Ethernet connection which makes it easier to share and some extra memory.

These printers were launched in 2003 and are no longer current. However the 500MHz processor will be adequate for everything but demanding graphical applications and the 64MB base memory can be expanded to 320MB. The catch might be that the printer doesn't achieve the 1200dpi or greater output that will give good looking photos at full speed. These printers will work well with ordinary office documents and forms. They may be weak for some kinds of documents like bitmapped pdfs and photography - but why use a mono laser printer for photographs?

The T634 is the fastest of it's family. The T630 rated for 35ppm and the T632 for T632ppm. The T634 also appears as the IBM Infoprint 1372

LCD display and simple menu buttons. The T632 the controls are in a prominent panel in the top middle of the printer lid making the machine look quite different from it's predecessors.

As with many older printers the T634 is not capable of both maximum speed and maximum resolution at the same time. The printers can manage a 600 dpi enhanced print considered "1200 image quality" at full speed. True 1200 dpi can half the speed. Duplex printing also reduces the number of sides per minute because the pages have to travel through the duplex path. See the T632 article for details.

Interface:

The basic T634 comes with both USB and parallel ports. The T634n machines gain an Ethernet port but lose the parallel port. All models have one expansion slot for optional internal print servers or optional connections.

Optional cards to fit the expansion slot are: RS-232C Serial Interface Card, Parallel 1284-B Interface Card, 802.11b wireless print adapter ("n" models)

Network:

The "n" models come with an embedded Ethernet port.

Lexmark provide toners in 5,000 page, High yield 21,000 page and Extra high yield 32,000 versions. There is also a "return program" where the user agrees to send used cartridges back to Lexmark for recycling. There is also a special sort of cartridge for printers mainly used for labelling purposes.

Maintenance Kit:

Maintenance kits include a fuser, transfer roller, charge roller and the pick rollers. The T634 will give the message "80 Scheduled Maintenance" on the LCD screen after printing 300,000 pages. Service technicians normally change these parts and give the printer an inspection and clean. After this the maintenance count must be reset to zero to clear the message.

Whats-In-The-Box:

These printers have been discontinued for some time and will no longer be available new. Refurbisher and brokers do sell machines, usually with a workable or refurbished cartridge but not with new fusers or sets of rollers. Warranty on second hand machines is usually 90 days or 6 months but would not include cover against fuser failure. User and service manuals can be found online.
