Lexmark T656dne
A4 monochrome laser printer with a speed of 53 pages per minute. The T656dne takes extra high yield cartridges with a capacity up to 35,000 pages. There is a 550 sheet main input tray so even the basic printer can run unattended for long periods. The printer can be part of a stack with up to four additional trays including a 2,000 sheet high capacity feeder. The printer itself is a T654 with a big screen and a hard disk.
Display size is the big feature of this printer of course. Its not just an easy to use colour touch-screen it's also a way to launch applications programs from the printer. This makes the printer an active part of a document management system.
Two applications are provided as standard:
Forms and Favourites application lets you print documents stored online, including Web pages, with just one touch. Forms and favourites retrieves forms without needing to use a PC. Typical forms are expense forms, time-cards, maps and phone lists. The ability to produce marketing collateral such as handouts and flyers on demand could save a great deal on pre-printed material.
Eco settings lets supervisors control a range of settings to reduce energy, paper and toner use.
An example application is:
Lexmark Print Release. This application gives you the flexibility to launch a print job and retrieve it from virtually any Lexmark workgroup laser printer or MFP on your network. Your document waits securely in the print queue until you release it on the printer of your choice simply by entering your PIN code or swiping your ID badge.
Lexmark call the touch-screen interface "e-Task" and the application programming environment behind it is Lexmark's e-solutions framework "eSF".
The T656dne might typically fit in a document management environment with multifunction printers such as the XS763de orXS658dfe.
Memory is 256MB base and 1280 MB Maximum, matched with a 600MHz processor.

The T65dne is part of a long series of "workgroup" monochrome laser printers starting with the T610 series. The T56dne is based on the same "4061" used in the T650 to T654 group.

Print Speed:
Printer speed depends on both the computer, communication path and printer. Printers will most nearly meet the rated speed when printing plain text for an inbuilt font. Printers may be slower when handling heavily graphical images such as full-page photos and (less self evidently) bitmapped PDFs.
The large 256MB base memory on this printer will be adequate for all but the most demanding tasks. Note that PCL tends to be faster and less memory hungry than PostScript. If the printer does slow down when handling a succession of heavily grphical pages expanding the memory should help; the maximum capacity is 1280 MB.

Print Resolution:
At 1200 dpi the printer is capable of fine lines and its best black and white photographic reproduction but may be slower. A tradeoff between speed and resolution can be made by using 600 dpi mode with 1200 or 2400 image quality using 2 or 4 bits per pixel.

Consumables:
The printing process consumes toner which it supplied in convenient single-piece print cartridges. The T654 can take ordinary 7,000 page yield cartridges, a high yield 25,000 page version and an extra-high yield 35,000 page version. Much less frequently at 300,000 page intervals the printer will need a maintenance kit which replaces the fuser and several rollers.
The T650 takes cartridges with an average yield of 7,000 and 25,000 pages (at 5% cover).

The print cartridges are regionalised using a chip and printers will only work with cartridges chipped for the correct region.
Fuser:
Laser printer fusers use a combination of heat and pressure to bond the toner powder to the page. The fuser has a non-stick surface to prevent toner bonding to it, but the properties of the material decline over time with wear from the paper and the toner materials. The fuser then need replacing. Normal procedure with this printer is to use a maintenance kit. A maintenance kit provides the fuser, charge roller, transfer roller and pick rollers. Using certain kinds of media or recycled cartridge toner can cause fusers to fail prematurely so they are available as separate units.

Maintenance Kit:
Laser printer fusers have a limited life as explained above. After 300,000 pages the printer will show the message "80 Scheduled Maintenance" (The User manual says "80 Routine Maintenance needed").
At this point various components should be replaced to keep the printer functioning optimally. The maintenance kit contains the fuser, pick rollers, charge roller and transfer roller.
Maintenance kits appear in T1 and T2 varieties and in voltages as outlined above.
