Lexmark T Series
The Lexmark T Series is an extensive list of mono laser printers aimed at office workgroup use. Each model has an "N" version with built in networking. The first printers in this series were badged "Optra". The Optra T610, T612, T614, T616 were robust printers based on the already proven and successful "S" series. These T series machines were first introduced in September 1999 / 2000 so they are old now but they still work well, are cheap to run and usually reliable.
The T series originated as an evolution of the "S" series. Basically Lexmark speeded up the engines, put in faster processors and improved the fuser. A further revision then gives the T620 series. T630, T640 and T650 series. The T420 and T430 aimed at smaller offices.
The series can take a range of input and output paper handling options: 250, 500 and 2000 sheet Trays, Auto Duplexer, Envelope Feeder, Output Expander, High Capacity Output Stacker and a 5 Bin Mailbox. The specific design changes with the new print engines but Lexmark has continued to provide a wide range of options.
The cartridges are large, suited to office use. Standard life cartridges typically last about 7,000 pages. Maximum toner cartridge life on the earlier machines is 25,000 pages and on the T654 the extra high yield cartridge has a life around 35,000 pages. This long life minimises the need for users to interact with the printer. Minimising user inconvenience is particularly important in office environments where people aren't comfortable doing things like changing cartridges.

Some users will regret that T series cartridges have a chip to monitor toner levels and "assure" them of Lexmark originals. This technique has been adopted across the printer industry as manufacturers protect the revenue they get from cartridges. The prebate or "killer chip" allows one use of the cartridge which makes refilling more difficult. Static Control Components is one of those making replacement chips; Lexmark took them to court in the US but ultimately lost. However the war isn't over, upgrading printer firmware from Lexmark's site can apparently invalidate a cartridge using a non-Lexmark chip in mid-use. Easy recycling can be a doubtful benefit, recyclers sometimes fail to seal cartridges properly or use inapropriate grades of toner and these can make a dreadful mess of a machine.
All the T series have security features - sensitive documents can be protected by a PIN code. Using this feature gets a lot easier on later models which have numeric keypads.
All the T series have emulations of PostScript 3, PCL6 and the PPDS Migration tool
All the series have a network version embedded on the control board. The "N" version often has some extra memory allowing workspace for the TCP/IP stack and buffering. There are also expansion slots, typically PCI on older machines.
The printers in the "T" range provide memory expansion slots, this can be 2 or 3 slots on older machines but on more recent models its a less generous single slot.
The Optra name was used on the T610, T612, T614 and T616. Lexmark didn't use the Optra name on subsequent printers like the T520, T522, T620, T622, T630, T632 and T634. This undoubtedly has caused confusion because distributors, retailers and users have often assumed anything beginning "T6" must be an Optra.
The series is: Optra T610, - T420, T430 - T520, T522. T620, T630, T640. Current model is the T650.

Optra T Series - T610 etc
The original Optra T series are contemporaneous with and match the HP Laserjet 4000 and 4100. Like the HP series the engine speed and capability was increased over several years so that subsequent printers are twice as fast and have 1200 dpi resolution.Other differences from the S series are that some components are more accessible.
All the series have a network version which incorporates an N2000 print server on the control board. There are also PCI slots for expansion and these can take the same print server cards used in the S series.
On printers that come with small amounts of memory the "N" version also includes a greater amount.
Printers have a slot for memory expansion using 100 pin SDRAM.
The Optra T614 and T616 can be shipped with extra trays Optra T 614 4069-414 Optra T 614 4069-41b Optra T 614n 4069-41e Optra T 614nl 4069-41l Optra T 614n 4069-41n | Other versions: Optra T 23v 4069-23v Optra T 23e 4069-23e |

T520 and T620 Series
In 2001 Lexmark upgraded the T series with the T520, T522, T620 and T622 models. The engine is based on the older T610 / 4069 series. A different toner and fuser are used to help speed things up.Lexmark updated the engine to give 1200dpi resolution and no sacrifice of speed. The T520 and T522 have moderate speeds of 20 and 25 pages per minute they are aimed at smaller offices. The T620 and T622 have speeds of 30ppm and 40ppm
Lexmark T520 and T522 are also available as multifunction machines, the X520 and X522 (X242 X443). The same machine is sold as the IBM Infoprint 1120 and 1125

T420
Lexmark introduced a new T420 machine in January 2003 with an engine called the "4048" and evolved this into the T430 in October 2004. Publications from the time make it very clear that Lexmark were aiming to take market share from the HP LaserJet 2200 with the T420. There were three models of T430. Lexmark subsequently seem to have decided to present small office machines as the "E" series-
T630 Series
The April 2003 launch of the T630 series continued the idea of a robust and highly expandable engine but introduced a new "engine" given the number 4060.The T630 is rather different to its predecessors so Lexmark might have made a break in the product name but seem to have preferred continuity.

T640 Series
Launched in June 2005 the T640 series move away from the convex case design that the T630 series had carried on. The control panel is recessed which probably reduces the chance of mis-operation and damage.T650 Series
With the T650 series Lexmark achieves a common look over most of its range - the curvy style of ten years ago is replaced by a functional 2-tone block. The T650 series was introduced in January 2009 alongside a new set of "E" series printers. The look and functionality of the printer is improved, particularly because many printers are now shipped as multifunction devices. The T650 is also space-efficient, paper input devices stack underneath and output devices on top.
The printers and multifunction models all use the same engine, so a great deal of flexibility is achieved with a minimum inventory of parts.
The T650 series also appear in Multifunction versions as the X651MFP, X652MFP, X654MFP, X656MFP, X658MFP.
