OKI C3200n Colour Laser Printer

A4 colour LED electrophotography printers with colour print speeds of 12 pages per minute for colour and 20ppm for mono print.

These printers were introduced in 2005. They are a step up from the C3100 because they have a control panel and offer the network and duplex options. They still use a "Windows host based printing system". They are a step down from the C5100 but use the same engine.

The Oki C3100 and C3200 printers rather oddly belong to the C5000 series - they are (or were) specially low cost versions of that rather admirable printer family.

Both use what Oki called a Windows host based printing system.   The computer formats the page for the printer. This has probably been the downfall for these printers; it often is for "host based" printing.

The print language in this case is OKI Hiper-C. The computer formats the page. The advantage of this is that the printer needs less processing power and can be cheaper than a printer using a standard print language. But there is that dependence on the driver: the printer could produce the page, the computer could power the page but if the driver has died - that's it.

The problem is that the printer relies on the computer's operating system drivers to generate the page image. A change in the computer operating system will stop the drivers working. In recent times Microsoft have shifted from a 32 bit to a 64 bit operating system and changed the way drivers work to require "signed drivers"

Printer brands will usually support their back catalogue for 5 years or so. However these printers are way over 5 years old - more like 10. The brands might argue that it would be an indefinite liability - and there is some truth in that. Oki could update the drivers for their old machines but neither they nor any other printer manufacturer will.

In 2015 we have had customers buy parts for the HP LaserJet 4L - dating back to 1993. However those printers used the standard PCL language. We find it dissapointing but not surprising that when we have asked HP for electronic information on such old printers they have refused. However we don't need information about the drivers or language, they use the PCL standard. Printer manufacturers don't like vintage machinery.

Oki won't update the C3100/C3200 Windows driver. Neither will Microsoft. Since Windows is closed-code neither will anyone else.

For commited Windows users we do have a suggestion. This series of printers ended with the C5650 and it does have a Windows 7 driver. Although newer drivers don't necessarily work with older printers in this case it may be worth trying.

This results in a curious situation. The printers were designed for Winows but are no longer supprted. As it happens a Linux driver ( foomatic/foohiperc) was devised which will suppot the printer. So these printers are likely to work under Linux, even if they no longer work under Windows.
