Colour laser printers with a small footprint

A series of exceptionally small colour laser printers & delivering A4 pages at up to 16 pages per minute in black and white and 4ppm in colour. Interestingly the mechanism isn't carousel based.   It uses a variant of the idea with 4 thin toner units arranged around a large drum. In mono print the drum makes one image, hence the printer can run at 16 pages per minute. In colour print the drum makes four successive images which are transfered to an intermediate belt. Print resolution is up to 2400 x 600 dpi effective output.

The CLP-310 is in direct competition with inkjet printers which have a simpler mechanism. Arguments for the laser printer are that it is faster, often cheaper, quieter and the output is smear, water and fade resistant.

The printer is available in Gray or Black plastic cases.

The printer offers Best (2400x600 dpi), Normal (1200 dpi ) and draft (600 dpi ) modes.

Compression technology is used to save space in the system RAM. There is no expansion slot available (presumably since this is a host-based printer there should be little need for it.

Consumables:

Printers were supplied with a 1,000 page black starter and 700 page colour starters. the starter pages do not have Samsung's curiously named CRUM chip.

Ordinary commercial cartridges are 1,500 black and 1,000 page colour.

CLT-K409S - Black Toner 1,500 pages yield.

CLT-C409S - Cyan Toner 1,000 page yield.

CLT-M409S - Magenta Toner 1,000 page yield.

CLT-Y409S - Yellow Toner 1,000 page yield.

There is no toner-save mode settable on the printer. However toner saving can be achieved in Windows, Linux and Mac OSX using SPRANQ "Ecofont". Windows users can buy toner-saving software.

Toner Waste Bottle:

All laser-printers tend to make about 5% waste toner. These machine collect it in a separate bottle to the left of the toners.

Image Transfer Belt:

When printing colour these printers make a succession of images on the drum then hold them on the belt ready to transfer to the paper.   Depending on printer use the belt will produce up to 100,000 black pages or 25,000 colour pages. It is considered a field replaceable unit, not a customer replaceable unit. The service manual may be needed.

Drum:

The images are made on the drum, which Samsung call an imaging unit. It lasts approximately 24,000 images. It is considered a customer replaceable unit.
